First 5 First Steps
First 5 First Steps empowers parents with knowledge, tools and support to nurture strong relationships with their children and help them grow up healthy and ready to succeed.
SBCS’s First 5 First Steps team partners with families in the South San Diego region from pregnancy through their child’s third birthday to provide no-cost support, education and resources customized to their strengths, needs and interests. Eligible program participants include teens (ages 13-21), military families, immigrants or refugees, and low-income families either expecting or with a child under two years of age.
Through regular one-on-one home visits and fun monthly parent group gatherings you will gain knowledge and skills around:
- Preparing for delivery and bringing your baby home
- Creating a strong and healthy relationship between you and your child
- Your child’s development and what to expect at each stage of their growth
- Positive parenting practices
- How to deal with stress and challenges as a parent
- Connecting to a medical provider and other helpful community programs
“My experience in the program as a first-time mom, finding this program has been a blessing from the first day to the last. I have learned that there are resources for all needs, and they have been able to guide me at all times so that my family can enjoy all the free resources in the community. I learned about healthy parenting and how to be independent once the program ended. It’s a pleasure to say that my son advanced as far as he could and now I have the knowledge to continue guiding him for a better quality of life. That is something that I will be grateful for all my life.” – Gloria
