Volunteers help SBCS (formerly South Bay Community Services) expand and enhance programs and services for families in need. Becoming a volunteer is also personally and professionally rewarding. Not only will you create a lasting impact in the lives of others, but you will acquire valuable work experience and network with many people in your community.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect the health and income of local families, SBCS volunteers are critical to ensuring that San Diegans in need have access to healthy food.
If you are looking for a way to give back during this difficult and uncertain time for many, consider volunteering to package and distribute food at one of our three weekly food distributions.
SBCS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax preparation services for households with low to moderate incomes. Volunteer duties can be performed remotely with flexible hours between January and April; do not require prior experience; and are great additions to your resume. Free tax law training provided and IRS certification training also offered. Tax professionals can earn Continuing Education Credits.
Volunteer positions currently open within the VITA program starting up in January 2021 include the following duties:
Screener – Screen taxpayers to determine the type of assistance they need and confirm they have the necessary documents to complete their tax returns.
Tax Preparer – Provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers upon successful completion and certification in tax law training, including the use of electronic filing software.
Quality Reviewer – Review tax returns completed by volunteer tax preparers, ensuring that every taxpayer receives top quality service and that tax returns are error-free. Must be tax law certified at Intermediate level or above.
