On May 18, 2022, SBCS celebrated our 5th annual Neighbor Day, or Dia del Vecinos, in Chula Vista. The event, conceived-of and organized by our Resident Leadership Academy, was featured on ABC10. We were honored to be joined by representatives from Supervisor Nora Vargas’ office and Chula Vista Police Department, including Chief Roxana Kennedy.

Neighbor Day celebrates the spirit of community and began in 2017 when our Resident Leadership Academy (RLA) program participants created the event to connect neighbors with one another and strengthen community bonds, especially for neighbors experiencing isolation like the elderly and homebound.

Since its inception in 2017, the day has become a beloved tradition that includes community-building activities, involved community services like police and fire departments, and has even been formally recognized by a proclamation from the City of Chula Vista.

In recent years, the community event has adapted into a drive-thru or walk-thru format due to COVID-19. This year, Neighbor Day was celebrated in conjunction with one of SBCS’s monthly free food distributions, offering 400 grocery packages to at least that many families.
