Second Annual: Light Up the Night

In the serene setting of Rohr Park in Bonita, California, Light Up the Night unfolded as a powerful gathering, uniting a compassionate community committed to raising awareness and support for those affected by domestic violence. Hosted by SBCS, this annual event brought together survivors, supporters, and advocates for an evening dedicated to breaking the cycle of abuse. Through candlelight and stories of strength, participants honored lives changed by domestic violence and stood together in solidarity for a brighter, safer future.

Hope: The Spark that Drives Change

The evening’s opening speech emphasized the transformative role of hope in a survivor’s journey. Every call to a shelter, every step toward legal support, and every courageous decision made by a survivor is fueled by hope—the vision of a life without fear and pain. This spark of hope empowers individuals to move forward, breaking through isolation and finding the support they need. As one speaker noted, “When you have hope, you give yourself permission to dream of a better future and to feel the courage to break the cycle.”

At SBCS, empowerment means granting individuals the support they need to make impactful, life-changing decisions—like finding a first job, opening a bank account, or finding their voice after years of silence. Survivors face daunting challenges, yet through the combined support of SBCS, the Chula Vista Police Department, and local partners, they receive the guidance needed to rebuild their lives and thrive.

Stories of Strength and Renewal

The evening’s most moving moments came from survivors sharing their deeply personal experiences. Jason Sharp, a father and social worker, spoke about his journey of overcoming domestic violence and reclaiming his life. His story illuminated the reality that domestic violence knows no bounds and can affect anyone, regardless of background or circumstance. “I’m here to make my world big again,” he said, as he urged others to seek help and embrace the support around them. Jason’s courage underscored that healing is possible, and life beyond abuse can be one filled with purpose and connection.

Isabel Rosales, a mother of three and survivor, also took the stage to share her story of resilience. Her journey painted a vivid picture of the barriers many face in escaping abusive relationships, particularly within tight-knit communities where asking for help can feel impossible. Isabel’s strength in escaping her dangerous situation and building a new life for her children reflects the determination of many. She closed her story with words that resonated across the gathering: “We’re all deserving of a beautiful, safe, and healthy life.”

Honoring Survivors and Building Community

The evening concluded with a powerful moment of silence as attendees illuminated the park with the glow of candles and phone lights, honoring those impacted by domestic violence. This simple yet moving act symbolized unity, a collective promise to support one another, and a commitment to building a community where safety and compassion are paramount.

Through events like Light Up the Night, SBCS showcases its work and wide-reaching impact on more than 50,000 lives across San Diego County every year. Resources like Casa Mariposa—a shelter named after the butterfly, symbolizing transformation and freedom—provide safe havens for survivors. Casa Mariposa alone has offered refuge to 95 families in just six months, empowering survivors with a nurturing environment where they can begin anew.
