Youth, families and children from the Barrio Logan, San Ysidro and Logan Heights communities receive cradle-to-career support services through SBCS’s San Diego Promise Neighborhood (SDPN) program.

Our Academic Advocates, a pillar of SDPN, support students at San Ysidro Middle School, San Ysidro High School and post-secondary alumni by helping to prepare them for success in college and beyond. Over spring break, 18 students in grades 7 – 12 took advantage of an enriching opportunity to explore college campuses in Orange County and Los Angeles County.

Alongside their Academic Advocates, these students traveled to California State University, Fullerton and California State University, Long Beach. Many were first-generation college students and for several it was their first time ever setting foot on a university campus.

“I really enjoyed how the students from CSU Fullerton interacted when the campus was busy,” Keyra said. “I also liked hanging with classmates on the trip who I usually doesn’t hangout with at school.”

We even got to see what the trip was like for the students first-hand when San Ysidro High School Senior Keyra  took over SBCS’s Instagram and Facebook Stories for the day. From the Walter Pyramid athletic center, to the student recreation center rock wall and lecture halls, we had a blast following along with the many college cornerstones the group explored. Relive every moment by viewing our Youth Takeover Highlight on Instagram.
