Childhood is the foundation upon which life is built. At SBCS we believe that the healthier that foundation is, the greater the possibility is of success and happiness in adulthood. SBCS’s San Diego and Chula Vista Promise Neighborhoods help strengthen children from birth through college and career.  

Representatives from SBCS, Hayward Promise Neighborhood and Mission Promise Neighborhood recently advocated for increased funding for Promise Neighborhoods during a “It Takes A Village Day of Action” event in Oakland in support of Assembly Bill 2517.  

The legislation is championed by Assemblymember Mia Bonta and would fund up to 20 organizations to plan for new neighborhood and regional cradle to career initiatives, like Promise Neighborhoods and regional cradle to career networks, at $250,000 per year for each organization. It would also support implementation at $3 million for neighborhood initiatives and at $1 million for regional initiatives, per year for each organization.

SBCS’ Promotoras Barbara Lugo, Paty Lomeli, Regina Moreno and Community Engagement Director Rachel Morineau shared first-hand how Promise Neighborhood programming has benefitted our community including how parent leadership workshops have inspired and motivated families to help students achieve academic success, and how rental, utility, and employment assistance has provided relief and support through the COVID-19 pandemic.   

The event was hosted by End Childhood Poverty in California.
